Philadelphia Autocross Winter Series - March 15, 2003 Photos | Results | Winter Series Info | Other Future Events I only managed to snap about a full roll of film before the batteries quit. To view more click on the photos link or any image above... ah, enjoy the full resolution. 8)
It was a beautiful sunny day hovering around 50+ degrees. As the day continued it warmed up considerably giving 3rd and 4th heat drivers quite an advantage.
The course was started by a 3 light tree which helped the staging cars leave from the same place. A beam tripped the light from yellow to red when a car was in place. Once on your way, there was an immediate 90 deg. Right that led into a short straight (maybe 70 yards). A tightish 180 degree Left that could be driven with a quick inside line without much fighting.
Then mostly straight through a deceiving kink that rewarded those who looked ahead to the 2 cone - 2 cone slalom. The kink put you toward the Right of the 1st two cones then, as directed by the pointer cones, to the Left that led into a long, skid-pad like 180 deg. plus Right hander. In typical fashion this took up the full width of the Eastern side of the lot.
Out of the 4 - 5 gate skid pad, sent you straight - GAS ON, baby - until a wicked four cone slalom. The first two gates were parallel, but the second 2 were off-set to the left, making it all important to brake prior to turning in.
The remainder of the trip West (toward the River) was GAS ON again with long sweeping turns. These were confidence sweepers in that full on gas was possible, but faith in one's line and/or tires was a prerequisite. Selecting a brake point was crucial for the tight Right, 180 deg. turn. Over cook it, and pay at least a .5 second penalty.
After the 180, a gate was set to the outside left on exit then turn toward the right to set up for the last turn, a 90 deg Left-hander. Slight over-steer or just a good, and sticky line seemed to work the best.
I had trouble with the kink before the long 180 deg. skid pad. Mostly because I wasn't looking far enough ahead, but also the car I was driving was not getting the traction I hoped through the skid pad. I experimented with a few different things, but contrary to my last run, entering slow gave no reward in traction. However setting up for the skid pad was difficult since the lead in turn was a bit tighter then the remainder. Confidence in setting the car with a slight lift or left foot braking might have been the best solution.
