Fact or Fiction: the 2004-2005 CRX?

Honda captured some Lotus spirit with the CRX.  It was a light-weight, well handling car, but with a bit more reliability.  The last American CRX Si was a 1991 model, weighing a tad over 2000 lbs. and running with a raw and torquey SOHC 108 bhp engine.  So the question is this: Is Honda going to pump up the Insight platform and offer CRX fans a new replacement for their aging, lightweight sports-car?

The images are of the Honda Insight.  The top image is from Honda's website.  The bottom one is "doctored" using Photoshop.

It's has been over a decade since the last CRX rolled off the assembly line there has been an up cropping of clubs and websites dedicated to this car.  No the Del Sol doesn't count.  Even if the Eastern part of the world referred to it a CRX, it just plain isn't.

I've owned and driven a CRX since 1993.  The first was a '90 DX and now a '90 Si.  Needless to say am a great fan of Honda's simplistic ingenuity epitomized with this car.  I created the concept image below because I yearn for a new version. This is my interpretation of what it might look like.

When the Insight was originally introduced, the first thing I noticed was the striking similarity to the CRX.  The basic layout is the same.  It has only two seats, a lightweight chassis, it's a hatchback, and the size and appearance are all very similar.  When sitting in the car, it almost brought tears to my eyes because even though it was all CRX inside, I knew the go-fast stuff was no where in sight.  What was missing?  Performance.

So because I'm more handy with the computer then I am with mechanics (the time required is a bit shorter too), I added performance in Photoshop.  Granted this is a bit "ricey", but hey it's just a concept.

Could Honda create an SI version of the Insight? Might some industrious person decide to "hop-up" one of these?  I'd like to see performance specs somewhere from the Civic SI to the RSX Type S, ranging from 160bhp to 200bhp.

I'm hoping that the rumors are true, that indeed a CRX is destined for our shores in the near future.

Check out crxsi.com for the article (rumor?).
