   Pro-Solo Report, Topeka, KS; Sept. 8, 2003

Article By:  Steve Ashcraft & Jim Blanton (edited by David Hess)

Steve Ashcraft, competed in Street Mod 2 and took 5th at the 2003 pro-solo finale. The finish gave Steve 5th place overall in class for the year long 10 event series. It was a real David vs Goliath story, since Steve's little Miata gives up anywhere from 100 to 400 HP to the competition. With the little 125HP CSP prepared miata running against pumped up ZO6s and Twin turbo RX-7s.  In early rounds Steve was fourth, behind two Corvettes and an RX-7. He was only passed by a new twin-screw, supercharged miata in the final round. Steve's efforts this year proved handling is better than shear HP in autocross.

The most unique car in SM2 (which finished behind Steve) was a highly modified Ford Focus driven by Bob Kasprzyk. For some reason the normal Focus drive-train was removed and a supercharged Cobra SVT drive-train boasting over 450 HP was installed.  Watching this Focus light up it's huge rear tires (yes, rear) was amazing.

Also driving Steve Ashcraft's Miata In CSP, Jim Blanton competed in one of the stiffest fields ever. Of the 12 drivers who qualified for the Pro-solo finale, eight were past National Champions. Getting off to a bad start Jim coned on his first five runs at the mirror image Pro-solo courses. Because of his unfortunate beginning, Jim played catch up all weekend, then finally figured out the right-hand side course late Saturday. The left-hand side course continued to baffle him though. Jim's best times were almost a second slower than the right. However, Jim savaged a 10th place finish.  Considering the talent Jim said he felt pretty good about his performance.

Newer isn't necessarily faster, proven by this year's CSP winner, Tom Ellam, who drove a 1972 Mazda RX-3.

In addition to the Pro-Solo event, both Drivers compete(d) in this year's 2003 Solo 2 National Championships.  However both will compete in the same class, C Street Prepared. The thirty-driver field will compete on Tuesday and Wednesday at Forbes field in Topeka. This considered the "Mecca" of autocross with over 1150 of the countries finest drivers.  Even for a driver competing in the event it is really amazing to witness :-)

* To date Jim Blanton is 18th and Steve Ashcraft is 20th out of a field of 30 drivers. (9/10/03)
