   Philadelphia Region SCCA Awards Banquet

   Written by:  Tony Emrich

The event was held at the Doylestown Country Club, very nice, Otto's BMW had an SUV and a Mini parked outside the entrance to set the mood before we even entered the building. There was a cocktail hour before dinner where everyone could catch up with friends not seen since the summer and discuss plans for the upcoming racing season. An excellent buffet dinner followed and through out the evening Steve Rosenberg handed out some very nice door prizes.

Rob Leone MC'd the event and he and George Bloesser, who spoke for the Road Racers, kind of set the tone of nostalgia for the past and promise for the future. Rob noted some disappointments that occurred over the past year for both the Road Racers and Autocrossers but also pointed out the high points of the past year as well as some good news for the future. Of particular interest to Autocrossers was mention of the cancellations at Camden but the very exciting news that we have found two new sites with huge lots, Sesame Place and Ripken Stadium, as well as the VERY exciting news that we will be hosting the NE Divisional Championship this year. George presented awards for the Road Racers, following the same tone by mentioning the passing of an old friend who was very involved with the SCCA and handing out awards for those who continued that tradition.

Our Speaker for the evening was Gerry Walsh who spoke of making the change from Autocross to Road Racing with the backing of Otto's BMW. If I understood his speech there seems to be some connection between increased beer consumption and making a succesfull switch to Road Racing (Dave please take note of this !!.).

The high point of the evening came next, awards presentations!! Again, George handled the Road Racers and Solo II Chief Dan Shalkowski handled the Autocrossers. Corey Ridgick took top honors with first place in STS and Driver of the Year. The evening wrapped up at this point and I think I can say everyone had a very good time, thanks to Steve Rosenberg for coordinating this excellent event.
