Alignment Clinic; Saturday, September 27, 2003

Members in attendance, myself, Rob, Tony, Mick, Wild Bill, Dave and Gayle, Jon and Justin with visits from my mother and my father. (By the way this was the first time I have ever met my father. It went very well.)

Rob was early and I wanted to get started so the MR2 hit the rack first. Rear camber seemed to be negative enough for Rob's liking so we let it be.  Rob told me to set the rear toe at pos.80 so with a little explanation of what we were doing.  How we were going to do it and why we set the toe and moved on to the front.  We did not have the negative 2.0 that we wanted and there was no adjustment available to us so we installed a crash bolt in the top hole of the right front strut and got all that we needed.  Caster was adjustable with the front strut rods.

After setting that at about 3.0 deg. positive it was throw in a little neg. toe and on to the Subaru.  By the way it was not as easy as this sounds.  With some conflict adjusting frozen bolts and strut rods it only took us two hours. 8)

After putting Tony's WRX on the rack and taking readings everything came up in factory specs but the steering wheel is crooked when he drives? No problem adjust the individual toe and out the door.  Factory specs are most of the time not what the autocrosser wants so we have to get the car back in and make our own specs.

Dave took some pictures as we all talked setup for racing. Jon and Rob helped explain how the geometry effects the handling of the car and I still don't know why Rob went with such a radical pos. toe setting in the back.  Still so much to learn.  New management has taken over at my place of employment, Just Tires.  The manager was very happy with having this little get together.  He insisted that he clock me in for the time that we were there and that if I wanted to it would be ok to do another gathering...Cool.  I am sure that in the off season that we can all use a little info on getting ready for 2004 so anyone who is interested in learning about alignment geometry (I know I am) lets get together.  Let me know and we will set a date.  The car or cars will be selected by myself this is not an email rush to get your car in. Just an evening to discuss car set-up.

Thanks for coming out.  I had a blast during the alignment clinic and then had a couple of beers across the street with my father.

See you next time,

Patrick
