Mark's
"Catch" List:
Northern New Jersey Region, Autocross 8/17/03

So, to start the 2003 season I set a goal to "catch" a
short list of drivers who are typically faster than me. Andre Downey
(pictured right) was
one, and I managed to catch him once this spring. This Saturday, Alan
Pozner (pictured below-right) was my latest victim, tho he was really victim of circumstance,
not of my great driving.
The venue: NNJR autox at Englishtown. The courses here tend to be pretty
fast as do the drivers. This Saturday was no exception. The course
started with some fast, flowing curves with a large loop in the middle.
After that was a wide, 180 degree sweeper leading to the back half of
the course which had two four-cone slaloms in a row into the
finish.
First run I put down a 49.4, an acceptable first run compared to other
drivers that I talked to. I made a couple of small mistakes, but nothing
serious. I figured that I could cut a second or so off of it by the end
of the day and maybe give Alan a little bit of competition. Alan pulled
in shortly afterward with a 52.9. Turns out that one of
his front tires was corded and he couldnt get any grip. My next run went
horrible. I got behind at the beginning of the first slalom and stayed
behind all the way into the finish. 50.7. Alan cut a second off his
time, but was clearly having issues. We put his front street tires on
before the next run, which was a little weird, street tires in front and
hoosiers in the rear. It must have been a little bit better, tho, cuz he
cut yet another second off his time with a 50.9. My third run felt
pretty good, but for some reason was still three tenths slower than my
first run.
Alan worked and I chilled for the second heat. There were a some timer
issues and stuff, so we only got two runs in our final heat. At this
point, Alan and I decided that it would be neat for him to finish the
day in my car. My fourth run felt pretty good, but my time didnt get
recorded for some reason. Doesnt matter, tho. I don't think it was any
faster. Alan put down a 51 as he tried to get used to the car. My fifth
run was my last opportunity to improve on the first run of the day. I
overcooked a couple of turns and came up with a 50. No improvement, but
Alan also ran a 50, leaving me in *first place* in DS, my first class
win ever at Englishtown. So that's my story
[Mark Yeck: pictured left] of catching the legendary Alan Pozner. Not very
satisfying, as I didn't really drive all that well. Hopefully I'll catch
Alan again sometime when he's at his best.
Met a couple of cool people this weekend, too. The third driver in DS
had a sweet WRX with flames on the side. I forget his name, tho. I also
met a guy named Rod with a blazingly fast 1991 drag racing Eclipse. It
was his first autox, I think, and he put down a
respectable 54 second run, but his launches were pretty amazing to
see.
Note: Photos were not taken
during the actual event written about. Any resemblance to actual
persons is completely fictitious and based on clay-mation characters.
